On Oct. 21, we’re hosting the first-ever MinnPost Tonight, a LIVE professional broadcast event featuring cultural luminaries discussing their work and what it means to be a Minnesotan, all while raising critical funding for MinnPost’s public-service newsroom.
Today, we’re highlighting Chris Montana, founder of Du Nord Social Spirits, the first (legal) Black-owned distillery in the country. Eight years ago, Montana opened Du Nord’s cocktail room in South Minneapolis, in the same neighborhood he was homeless as a teenager while attending South High School. When the pandemic hit, the business shifted to producing hand sanitizer. When the facility was damaged in the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd, Du Nord started a food bank and raised money for supplies, an effort that has now become Du Nord Foundation. The philanthropic venture still runs a community food market and is giving grants to BIPOC-owned businesses. (Read a story about Chris Montana.)
